6 Helpful Tips for Raising Grateful Children

Instilling a sense of gratitude in your child, whether during the holiday season or at any time of year, is one of the most rewarding gifts you can offer. Teaching children to appreciate the little things can lead to positive outcomes that last a lifetime, from enhanced relationships to increased happiness.

As parents, you not only want your children to recognize and appreciate the many blessings in their lives, but also to enjoy the benefits of gratitude. If you are trying to reinforce thankfulness in your child, we’re here to provide helpful tips for raising grateful children!

How to Raise Grateful Children

1. Be a Good Example

Children learn a lot by observing their parents. Demonstrate gratitude in everyday moments, whether it’s thanking someone for holding the door or offering a kind word to a cashier. Make sure to involve your kids in these acts, so they can see the importance of appreciation in action.

2. Talk About Your Feelings

Talking about feelings with children can have a big impact on their understanding of emotions. When someone says, “Thank you,” ask them, “How did that make you feel?” This gives them an example of what feelings are associated with doing nice things, which helps them understand how their behavior might affect others.

3. Set Expectations

Having your child fundraise at school, host a bake sale, or take part in anything for a good cause is a fantastic way to boost your child’s understanding of gratefulness, while allowing a chance to give back at the same time.

4. Practice Saying “Thank You”

While this is more of a social custom, saying “thank you” can be heartfelt and meaningful too. Having your child watch and hear you say “thank you” can help them gain a better understanding of the importance of the phrase.

5. Share the Love

There are many fun ways to show gratitude to others! Does your child love crafting? Make a handmade card for a neighbor or friend to show their appreciation. Then, give your child a high five, hug, or thumbs up to help solidify that connection.

6. Praise Your Children

Tuning in to and rewarding your children’s ways of being grateful will help them understand that appreciation is important and should be their way of life.
