The Challenge
Cottingham & Butler, a leading insurance brokerage and benefits firm, recognized a growing challenge among its employees: access to quality childcare in the Dubuque, Iowa area was extremely limited. The region was considered a childcare desert, leaving working families with few reliable options. This shortage created additional stress for employees balancing work and family responsibilities and impacted recruitment and retention efforts.
To better support its workforce and the surrounding community, Cottingham & Butler reached out to New Horizon Academy to explore an on-site childcare solution. By partnering with New Horizon Academy, Cottingham & butler aimed to provide convenience, high-quality early education and care for both its employees and local families, strengthening work/life balance, employee satisfaction, and community well-being.
The Solution
The team at New Horizon Academy collaborated closely with Cottingham & Butler to design a high-quality, on-site early learning center that would meet the needs of working families and support the broader Dubuque community. As part of this partnership, New Horizon Academy assisted Cottingham & Butler in preparing and submitting a Child Care Business Incentive Grant application, which successfully secured $3 million in funding to support the project. This collaboration ensured that the new childcare center would be both financially sustainable and designed to deliver exceptional educational experiences for the children of Cottingham & Butler employees and families in the Dubuque area.
The Result
The collaboration between Cottingham & Butler and New Horizon Academy resulted in a successful and sustainable on-site childcare solution that addressed the needs of both employees and families in the Dubuque, Iowa community. The partnership not only strengthened Cottingham & Butler’s commitment to supporting working families, but also demonstrated the impact that employer-sponsored childcare can have on workforce stability, employee engagement, and community vitality.
Building on this success, New Horizon Academy has continued to expand its partnerships, including a new collaboration with Southwest Health in Platteville, Wisconsin, to provide high-quality, on-site childcare for healthcare professionals and local families. These partnerships serve as a model for how employers can invest in early education to strengthen recruitment, retention, and community well-being.
