Unlocking Creativity: The Power of Process Art
What makes good art? What must a work contain in order to qualify as art? If you were to ask 10 people these questions, you’d likely receive 10 different answers. This is because we all approach art differently, with our own opinions and beliefs about creativity, mediums, processes, and final products.
This applies to children as well as adults. All children possess unique creativity, and their own ideas about art and how to create it. At New Horizon Academy, we aim to encourage this creativity and individuality through the concept of “process art.”
What is Process Art?
As its name indicates, process art emphasizes the process of creating the art rather than the end product. Children are given a variety of materials, mediums and tools, and encouraged to use them in their own way. Teachers are there to guide and help facilitate and support, but children are given the freedom to create whatever and however they’d like. This results in finished art projects that are distinctive and different from one another.
The Benefits of Process Art
Allowing children the freedom to develop and create art in their own way carries significant benefits for young children of all ages.
First, using different tools helps children build fine motor skills. Second, the use of multiple mediums creates sensory experiences and encourages exploration. Third, children plan, problem solve, predict, and compare, which is important for cognitive development. And finally, giving children autonomy and supporting their creativity helps their social-emotional development.
