How to Raise Inclusive Children

Parenting Pickup Podcast Season 3 Episode 1 - Raising Inclusive Children

As parents, we want to raise children who are kind, welcoming, and open-minded. But in an increasingly complicated world, it can be difficult to know exactly how to teach and instill those values in our kids.

In the season three premiere of the Parenting Pickup Podcast, we spoke to Dianne Haulcy about what parents and families can do to help their children grow up to be inclusive and accepting of others.

Dianne Haulcy is the CEO of The Family Partnership, a nonprofit organization that provides resources for families who have experienced poverty and trauma. Dianne also hosts The Early Risers, a Minnesota Public Radio podcast about raising children with an understanding of race, implicit biases, and cultural differences.

In this episode of the Parenting Pickup Podcast, Dianne and host Cara discuss a wide variety of topics relating to inclusivity, implicit bias, and anti-racism, including:

  • Environmental conditioning
  • Identifying and understanding our own implicit bias
  • Understanding why “color blindness” is not a good method of cultural appreciation
  • How to have conversations with young children about race
  • Resources for families who want to promote an anti-racist education
