DIY Postcards for Grandparents Day
At New Horizon Academy, we are proud to honor the special role grandparents and grandfriends play in our children’s lives. Their love, guidance, and wisdom create bonds that connect generations and strengthen families.
When is Grandparents Day?
National Grandparents Day became official in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day a day of recognition. The idea, however, began years earlier with Marian McQuade, a West Virginia mother of 15 and an advocate for the elderly who wanted to ensure grandparents were celebrated and never forgotten.
The Meaning Behind National Grandparents Day
Her vision for the holiday had three purposes:
- To honor the contributions grandparents bring to their families and society.
- To give grandparents a chance to connect with their grandchildren.
- To provide an opportunity for children to appreciate the wisdom and experiences older generations can share.
