How to Make Reading a Daily Habit

National Book Lovers Day, celebrated on August 9 of each year, is a great time to celebrate the power and importance of reading with the children in your life. In honor of National Book Lovers Day, we would like to share tips to make reading with your child a daily habit.

At New Horizon Academy, reading is part of the daily routine in all classrooms, from infant to pre-kindergarten. Each classroom has a wide variety of books and dedicated reading areas for children to use throughout the day.

In addition, our teachers incorporate the latest research on reading and early literacy to help children to read. As a result, a majority of New Horizon Academy graduates can read at kindergarten levels before they even leave our schools!

How to Make Reading a Daily Habit

1. Schedule daily reading time.

Just as you schedule other family activities, like dinner, sports, baths, etc., schedule reading time as part of your daily routine.

2. Bring books wherever you go.

Create an on-the-go book bag. Fill it with books and writing materials, then take it with you whenever you leave home. Your child will have books and activities to occupy them while traveling, at restaurants, at the doctor’s office, and more.

3. Listen to audiobooks or podcasts in the car.

Turn off the radio and listen to an audiobook or podcast. You can usually check out audiobooks from your local library for free!

4. Make reading an adventure!

Involve your child in reading. Let them chime in on repeated phrases, add sound effects, or ask questions. Use silly voices to make it a fun bonding experience for both you and your child.

5. Be a reading role model.

Let your child see you read. This sends a message that reading is important and enjoyable.
