Working closely with the lead teacher, the Assistant Teacher helps create a warm, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment where every child feels valued and encouraged. Responsibilities include supporting curriculum activities, guiding children through daily routines, fostering positive social interactions, and helping nurture each child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Despite its name, this comprehensive social emotional learning program has nothing to do with disciplining children—in fact, it’s the exact opposite. At New Horizon Academy, staff are trained in Conscious Discipline, a framework that empowers adults to model self-discipline in order to help develop those same skills in children. This approach supports educators and families in resolving conflict while promoting healthy brain development, creating a more positive and effective learning environment.
Assessment is a familiar buzzword in early childhood education, but it is not always easily understood or put into practice. At New Horizon Academy, staff are supported through dedicated training that helps them build confidence in using assessment effectively. Through this learning, educators practice gathering information from multiple sources and using it to make thoughtful decisions that support each child and their family. They also explore strategies for organizing and interpreting this information to guide daily curriculum planning. By focusing on assessment as an ongoing process, teachers are better equipped to understand each child’s development and create learning experiences that help every child succeed.
New Horizon Academy supports continuous learning through Compass, an online platform designed to guide employees through their professional development journey. This system provides easy access to high-quality, free training courses for teachers, school leaders, and corporate staff, allowing them to learn anytime and track their progress along the way. As new courses are continuously added, employees have ongoing opportunities to grow their skills, stay engaged in learning, and strengthen the quality of education and care they provide.
New Horizon Academy invests in its staff by helping cover the costs of completing a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or an Associate’s Degree (AA). This support reduces financial barriers and makes continued education more accessible, allowing educators to focus on building their knowledge and strengthening their teaching practices. As a result, teachers can grow in their careers while enhancing the quality of care and learning experiences they provide to children and families.
