How We Support Your Growth

New Horizon Academy trains staff in Conscious Discipline, a social-emotional learning approach that focuses on helping educators model self-regulation and positive behavior for children. Despite its name, this comprehensive social emotional learning program has nothing to do with disciplining children—in fact, it’s the exact opposite. At New Horizon Academy, staff are trained in Conscious Discipline, a framework that empowers adults to model self-discipline in order to help develop those same skills in children. This approach supports educators and families in resolving conflict while promoting healthy brain development, creating a more positive and effective learning environment.

Assessment is a familiar buzzword in early childhood education, but it is not always easily understood or put into practice. At New Horizon Academy, staff are supported through dedicated training that helps them build confidence in using assessment effectively. Through this learning, educators practice gathering information from multiple sources and using it to make thoughtful decisions that support each child and their family. They also explore strategies for organizing and interpreting this information to guide daily curriculum planning. By focusing on assessment as an ongoing process, teachers are better equipped to understand each child’s development and create learning experiences that help every child succeed.

New Horizon Academy supports continuous learning through Compass, an online platform designed to guide employees through their professional development journey. This system provides easy access to high-quality, free training courses for teachers, school leaders, and corporate staff, allowing them to learn anytime and track their progress along the way. As new courses are continuously added, employees have ongoing opportunities to grow their skills, stay engaged in learning, and strengthen the quality of education and care they provide.

New Horizon Academy invests in its staff by helping cover the costs of completing a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or an Associate’s Degree (AA). This support reduces financial barriers and makes continued education more accessible, allowing educators to focus on building their knowledge and strengthening their teaching practices. As a result, teachers can grow in their careers while enhancing the quality of care and learning experiences they provide to children and families.

My inspiration for working in early childhood education came from the fond memories I have of attending preschool myself. Incredibly, 27 years later, I had the privilege of working alongside my favorite preschool teacher! I have completed some college and plan to continue my education in early childhood education to further grow in my career. Since joining New Horizon Academy, I have had the opportunity to work in multiple classrooms, gaining valuable knowledge and hands-on experience along the way. I especially love those teachable moments and seeing the positive impact I can have on my students. Creating lasting memories and building meaningful bonds with children and families are very important to me. I am also proud of the flexibility and adaptability I bring to my center, including my ability to help bridge language barriers when needed. My director, Abby, has been amazing to work with—she regularly checks in, is very accommodating, and makes me feel supported. I truly love being part of this center!

I come from a huge family and helped raise my four younger brothers, which led me to want to be involved in the nurturing, growth, and development of children. Since beginning this journey, I have learned the concepts and practices of Conscious Discipline, and in such a short period of time, it has helped me grow tremendously—not only as a teacher, but also as a mother. It has been my favorite part of this journey so far and has shown me such a beautiful way to teach, connect with, and support children. It challenges me to become a better version of myself every day, and I always leave work having learned something new and valuable. I have also grown into an amazing team with my co-teacher, Kelly. Together, we take pride in caring for our classroom and the children’s belongings, and I put a great deal of effort into creating meaningful bonds with each child. I especially love being able to bring what I have learned through Conscious Discipline home and apply it to the relationship between my daughter and me. This is genuinely the best place I have ever worked, and having such an amazing director makes the experience even more meaningful.

What inspired me to pursue a career in early childhood education was the opportunity to make a positive impact early in a child’s life and build meaningful connections during their most important developmental stages. Since joining NHA, my career has grown tremendously through hands-on experience and, most importantly, professional development. One of the things I love most about my work is the sense of community I have built with my coworkers and the lifelong connections I am able to form with the children and their families. My school family is proud of how far I have come, and I am proud of myself for continuing to grow, showing up every day, and always putting my best foot forward.
